PM Educational Workshop - Marcia Ryder, RN MS PhD
Description:
The presence of an infectious agent at a portal of entry is the first
link in the pathogenesis of health care associated infections,
especially
catheter-related
bloodstream infections (CRBSI). All access ports, i.e., needleless
connectors, stopcocks, injection ports, add-on devices and catheter
hubs are portals for
microbial entry to the intravenous system and the bloodstream. Access
site disinfection is a critical component for prevention of
intraluminal biofilm
formation and CRBSI. The goal of this workshop is to provide a
scientific overview of the essential criteria necessary for effective
site disinfection
and to introduce scientific data in support of a novel technology.
Course
Objectives:
Explain the significance of biofilm formation in intravenous systems.
State the existing standards, guidelines and requirements for access
site disinfection.
List the essential elements of effective access site disinfection.
