USC Center for Medical Biofilm Research
University of Southern California
Los Angeles, CA

WHEN: September 12, 2008      5:00 PM – 6:30 PM      WHERE: Savannah Int’l Trade & Convention Center

5:30 – 6:30 PM Educational Workshop - Marcia Ryder, RN MS PhD

Description: The presence of an infectious agent at a portal of entry is the first link in the pathogenesis of health care associated infections, especially

catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI).  All access ports, i.e., needleless connectors, stopcocks, injection ports, add-on devices and catheter

hubs are portals for microbial entry to the intravenous system and the bloodstream. Access site disinfection is a critical component for prevention of

intraluminal biofilm formation and CRBSI. The goal of this workshop is to provide a scientific overview of the essential criteria necessary for effective

site disinfection and to introduce scientific data in support of a novel technology.

 Course Objectives

Explain the significance of biofilm formation in intravenous systems.

State the existing standards, guidelines and requirements for access site disinfection.

List the essential elements of effective access site disinfection.

RSVP by September 5th as space is limited!

Revolution in modern hernia surgery

Mesh-Implant TiMESH

Titanium and synthetics are two materials that have been used with great success in implant medicine for decades. The applications and properties of the two materials are very different. Titanium is used primarily because of its excellent body acceptance. Hernia mesh consists of synthetic material, which is an indispensable component of modern hernia surgery due to its flexibility.

GfE Medzintechnik has now succeeded in combining both properties - excellent biocompatibility and the highest level of flexibility.

Nit-Occlud® PDA Occlusion System

The Nit-Occlud® spiral coil system is designed for transcatheter occlusion of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) of all shapes. Safety and reliability of this system are the result of a continuous further improvement of the proven Duct-Occlud® system.
Since 1993 more than 2000 Duct-Occlud® coils of standard type and "S" type (reinforced reverse cone) have been implanted worldwide. In a controlled multicenter study 743 patients have been treated. The overall occlusion rate was above 93 %. So far the Nit-Occlud® system has shown an occlusion rate of 96,5 % after 6 months (see clinical data). Nit-Occlud® Coil
Nitinol coil especially designed for PDA closure
Graduated stiffness from aortal to proximal windings for optimal adaptation to ductus anatomy
Strong distal windings avoid "pull through"
Tight and compact windings in the mid portion ensure fast and efficient occlusion
Fits all PDA types and sizes up to 6 mm
Delivery through 4F/5F
Repositionable prior to release
Coil is premounted on the delivery system
Radiopaque
MRI compatible
