pfm medical back on the path of growth

07/20/2018

The Cologne-based supplier of healthcare solutions, pfm medical, returned to the path of growth in the fiscal year 2017. In the period from 01/01 to 31/12/2017, the pfm medical Group reports revenue of EUR 104.8 million, which reflects an increase of 3.8 per cent compared to the previous year (EUR 100.9 million). At EUR 2.1 million, earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) were also higher than in 2016 (EUR 1.5 million). The group is setting the stage for further growth with new products and investments both domestically and abroad.

At EUR 104.8 million across the entire solution portfolio, revenue increased by 3.8 per cent from the previous year with surgical products being a growth driver. The mesh implants segment in particular experienced a 27 per cent increase in revenue. Both cardiovascular technologies and the infusion area also experienced continued growth again in addition to the histotechnology division. The share of in-house production was at 49.5 per cent in the reporting period, which was 1.8 per cent lower than in 2016. Foreign revenue increased by 1.0 per cent and made up 43.5 per cent of total revenue.

In 2017, the pfm medical Group recorded significantly increased earnings of EUR 2.1 million (EBIT – Earnings Before Interest and Taxes) compared to the previous year (EUR 1.5 million). pfm medical was able to lower costs overall despite investing heavily in IT infrastructure, buildings, and systems both domestically and abroad, which had a positive impact on earnings.

Investments for more growth

pfm medical primarily invested abroad in 2017 to, for example, better exploit potential and opportunities in the strategically important US market. The company expanded its location in Carlsbad, California, and expanded production including a clean room which goes with it. pfm medical also invested in buildings, systems, and operating equipment at the Nuremberg and Nonnweiler production locations as well as at headquarter. More efficiency through IT-supported processes served as the guiding basis for the ongoing continued high investments in the further development of the IT infrastructure and in-house processes.

Committed for a better quality of life

  • With TiLOOP® Bra Pocket, pfm medical was the world’s first manufacturer to bring a bag made from titanised, synthetic material for prepectoral breast reconstruction onto the market. Prepectoral reconstruction offers the advantage that the muscle does not need to be transected from the ribcage. This results in less post-operative pain, fast reconvalescence as well as retaining muscle function for patients with breast carcinoma. Anchoring the implant bag on the intact chest muscle lets the implant and muscle remain in a physiological position and allows patients to benefit from aesthetic and functional advantages. This also provides a new option for plastic-aesthetic breast surgery for primary or corrective augmentation.
  • In February 2017, pfm medical ag was able to successfully finish recruiting a total of 180 study participants for a market observation study for the Nit-Occlud® PDA heart implant approved for the US. The implantable occluder was approved for the US market in 2013. pfm medical ag meets the FDA’s strict requirements with the ‘Nit-Occlud® PDA market observation study’. This underscores the effectiveness and safety of the PDA spiral after entering the US market.
